retailer's volume — with no stores
TikTok Shop sold about a third of a major beauty retailer's quarterly volume with no stores. That's not a growth-rate story — it's a change of weight class. But the real lesson is elsewhere: a channel amplifies demand; it doesn't create it. (Market figures below are per Beauty Independent; some forecasts per eMarketer.)
01Not the growth rate — the weight class
Per Beauty Independent, TikTok Shop's Q2 beauty GMV reached roughly $980 million, up sharply year over year — about a third of a major beauty specialty retailer's quarterly revenue, with no stores at all. It has already passed the revenue of some large beauty-supply chains.
The rival is now big-box retail
eMarketer forecasts US TikTok Shop GMV at roughly $23.4 billion this year. In other words, TikTok Shop's rival is no longer social — it's big-box and warehouse retail.
02It wasn't a product that sold — it was a routine
What's telling is the makeup of the top ranks. Per Beauty Independent, Korean beauty brands took the top two spots in Q2 beauty (trading places quarter to quarter), and three of the top five were sets.
Ingredients drive clicks; sets drive sales
Not single SKUs — routines made the top ranks
- Routine sets — much of the top revenue came from sets, not single SKUs
- Ingredient keywords — PDRN, collagen, NAD+ drove the clicks
- Pre-built demand — the top brands entered having already created demand
So ingredients make the click, and sets make the sale. It wasn't a single hero SKU but a "routine-level" bundle that won on the channel.
03Not a fad — the board is being redrawn
Looking at the last twelve months by category (per Beauty Independent), skincare and haircare posted triple-digit growth. Skincare jumped sharply year over year, and haircare did the same.
When one or two categories triple, that isn't a passing trend — it's a signal that the board itself is being redrawn. Which category, prepared with which channel grammar, is what separates winners.
04Consumers don't search "brands"
Hashtag view counts tell the story. Consumers search a concern, not a brand name — pigmentation, rice-water care, eyeliner how-to, breath care. These keywords rack up tens of millions of views.
It's the concern that gets searched
- Concern-based hashtags act as search bars at tens-of-millions scale
- A single demo video can hit millions of views → tens of thousands in sales
- Ingredient / concern in the product name is a search-design must
Hashtags are being used as search bars, not ad boards. Product names and detail pages have to be designed for "concern search" to be found.
A channel amplifies demand.
It doesn't create it.
05"Just get on the platform" is wrong
Here's the most important part. Per Beauty Independent, there are roughly 800,000 US TikTok Shop stores — and more than half had zero sales in 2025. Only about 2,143 crossed $1 million. Success cases are around 0.25% of the total.
Demand comes before the channel
- Starting from zero awareness · relying on one SKU going viral
- Entering with no fee/ad budget · betting everything on one channel
- Demand built before entry · routine-level set bundles
- Ad budget secured up front · spread across multiple channels
The top brands entered with demand already built. TikTok Shop didn't make the brands — it grew what was already there.
06Where to fix now — five OEM insights
You have to rebuild the "sellable product structure" first, not the channel. Five moves:
Re-bundle as a routine set
Repackage the hero into a 3–5 step routine set. It's the core structure behind top-rank revenue.
Put the ingredient in the name
This is search design, not marketing. Put ingredient and concern keywords in the product name so it surfaces on "concern search."
Set fees and ad budget first
Design the margin structure and ad budget to survive a viral spike before entry. No-budget entry mostly ends at zero sales.
Define the product by concern hashtag
Define it by concern — pigmentation, breath, exfoliation — so it's discovered by the problem, not the brand name.
Claim the adjacent category
Skincare is saturated; oral care, body devices, longevity (NAD+) are open. The next fight happens off the face.
How this fits the framework
This is the "channel and distribution" dimension of the LUK Insight series — where the fights over ingredient, delivery, and reason ultimately converge on the "sellable product structure." A channel amplifies demand; it doesn't create it. Only brands that designed demand, routine, search, and budget before entry survive on TikTok Shop. Does your brand have demand to amplify right now?
07OEM FAQ
Can LUK Corp. develop a "TikTok Shop-ready routine set"?
Yes. The key is designing the lineup as a 3–5 step routine set, not a single hero SKU. We build the set around an ingredient story (e.g., PDRN, collagen, NAD+-type actives) and optimize unit cost, size, and packaging for channel selling.
Do you also design "searchable" product names?
At the development stage, we propose putting ingredient and concern keywords into the product name and detail. Efficacy wording stays within test results and is reviewed against each market's advertising/labeling rules (Korea MFDS, US FDA/MoCRA, EU, etc.).
Can you do adjacent categories (oral care, body devices)?
Beyond skincare, masks, and hair, we can extend into target categories via partner sourcing and collaboration. We review category-specific regulations (e.g., oral care, device certifications) and design the entry path together.
What about US regulations?
In the US, cosmetics follow MoCRA facility/product registration and labeling/claim rules, and some categories (sun care, color, etc.) carry additional requirements. LUK Corp. builds label/claim review and registration into the development package.
What are the MOQ, lead time, and payment terms?
MOQ is 5,000 units per SKU (pilots around 2,000 negotiable), lead time roughly 2–3 months for a first order (plus testing/registration time), and payment 50% deposit / 50% balance before shipping. For sets, we align per-SKU schedules in one plan.
