After Soothing Comes
the Skin Barrier
WGSN's four barrier-care opportunities for 2027 — and the two Korean manufacturing already holds
Source : WGSN — 2027 Barrier Care Forecast
For years, sensitive-skin care followed one script: something goes wrong, you calm it, you repair it. WGSN's 2027 outlook says the script is changing. The market's center of gravity is shifting from repairing damage to maintaining a barrier that doesn't break down.
From REPAIR to RESILIENCE

REPAIR → RESILIENCE
Not recovery after damage — a barrier that doesn't easily break
WGSN's Four Product Strategies
01 CLIMATE-ADAPTIVE (barrier care that anticipates climate stress), 02 HOLISTIC SENSITIVE CARE (skincare × sleep × emotional well-being), 03 PRE/POST PROCEDURE (from prep to home care), and 04 BIOMIMETIC (barrier care that mimics skin's own structure). This post follows the two closest to Korean beauty — procedure-adjacent care and biomimetics.
Opportunity ① — The Space Between Procedure and Cosmetics Becomes a Market
Lasers, peels, microneedling, injectables — as aesthetic procedures become routine, a new skincare segment is forming: one system connecting pre-procedure prep all the way to home care.
PREPARE → PROCEDURE → RECOVER → MAINTAIN

Year over year — small, but growing fast
At the center of this segment sit the recovery actives. CLINIC → HOME — a system that carries the professional recovery experience into the bathroom shelf, with rising conversation share for PDRN 3.8% (+2.8ppt), peptides 11.9% (+1.9ppt), and exosomes 2.1% (+1.5ppt). The ingredients Korean beauty is already strong in are connecting directly to the post-procedure home care market.
COSRX — 5 PDRN Vital Care PDRN systematized across toner, serum, and mask
Dermalogica — Exo Booster Microneedling followed by exosome home care
Post-procedure care is expanding beyond the clinic into home care (cases cited by WGSN)
Opportunity ② — The Next Race Is Not a Stronger Active
BIOMIMETIC BEAUTY — sensitive care is moving past temporary soothing toward mimicking the skin's own structure and function. The rising ingredients look like skin itself: ceramides 16.2% (+1.4ppt), peptides 11.9% (+1.9ppt), collagen 11.6% (+0.8ppt). The point isn't a new active — it's how precisely you replicate a structure the skin already recognizes.
SKIN-IDENTICAL — ingredients that resemble skin
Ceramides · peptides · collagen — today's center, mimicking the barrier's structural units.
CELL-SIGNALING — into biological signaling
Exosomes 5.4% (+1.8ppt), EGF 0.8% (+0.1ppt) — biomimicry's next stage, already expanding.
WGSN cites Mimétique, which mimics the skin's protection, hydration, and recovery functions with a seven-ceramide complex. This is not a concentration race — it's a structural design race, where formulation technology becomes the brand language itself.
Two Opportunities Still Open
CLIMATE-ADAPTIVE barrier care that anticipates climate stress, and HOLISTIC SENSITIVE CARE that connects skincare to sleep and emotional well-being. The next generation of sensitive-skin lines will come from somewhere along these four directions.
The next battleground in sensitive skin isn't soothing speed — it's barrier resilience. And resilience comes from formulation architecture, not marketing copy.
LUK'S INSIGHT
1. Design a PREPARE→MAINTAIN system, not a single SKU
The unit of the procedure-adjacent market is a staged routine, not one serum. Barrier prep before the procedure, soothing and recovery right after, then maintenance — a toner-serum-mask system built on one formulation logic is the price of entry.
2. The next question about recovery actives is not "what" but "in what structure"
PDRN, peptides, exosomes — Korean manufacturing is already strong here. Differentiation now comes from biomimetic formulation technique: ceramide complex design, lipid ratios, delivery architecture. The blueprint, not the ingredient list, is the competitive edge.
3. "Barrier resilience" only becomes a claim with evidence
When the language shifts from repair to resilience, efficacy testing must shift with it. Designing resilience-supporting tests — TEWL, barrier metrics — and checking market-by-market claim rules at the development stage is the safe entry into treatment-adjacent categories.
Time to Design What Comes After Soothing
LUK Corp. connects PDRN, peptide, and exosome formulation to procedure-adjacent routine systems, efficacy evidence, and export documentation — in one flow.
