Unmet color cosmetics needs found in 280,000 conversations

If TikTok is where products get discovered, Reddit is where the questions after actually using them get asked. It's where the questions brands never answered accumulate — which is why North America's color-cosmetics gaps surface on Reddit before they surface anywhere else.

The Most-Discussed: Foundation and Blush

FOUNDATION  53.3K mentions · 818.3K upvotes

BLUSH  43.4K · 872.9K

MASCARA  32.3K · 554.2K

EYESHADOW  31.3K · 756.5K

CONCEALER  30.2K · 735.2K

More interesting than the volume is the question that follows use. In foundation and blush, one question kept repeating: "What color does this become on MY skin?"

No Foundation Fits — So They're Mixing Blue Themselves

The skin tone that kept appearing: the olive undertone. When foundations pull orange or yellow on olive skin, consumers mix blue and green color adjusters to correct the shade themselves. Blush has the same problem — warm pinks oxidize orange or muddy, sending users hunting for purple, mauve, and berry.

SHADE COUNT  ≠  SHADE FIT

How many shades you carry matters as much as what each one becomes on whom

Loved for the Pigment. Struggled Because of the Pigment.

In Rare Beauty conversations (9.3K mentions · 166.4K upvotes), the same trait appeared in both the praise and the complaints.

▲ Why they loved it — HIGHLY PIGMENTED

Longevity · glow

▼ Top complaints — HIGHLY PIGMENTED

Patchiness · inaccurate shades

Intense pigment is the draw — and it makes dosing and blending harder. If high pigmentation is your selling point, telling people how much to use is part of the claim.

Consumers Noticed the Color Change First

After the NARS Orgasm blush reformulation, a debate erupted — same name, different color: 9,400 upvotes · 8,504 comments. The complaint wasn't really about the new formula. It was "if it changed, why weren't we properly told?" Spate's advice: if the payoff changed, update the legacy marketing imagery too.

The new standard for renewals: show exactly what changed.

A Consumer Put the Tube on a Scale

Dior's stick foundation — labeled 10g, user-measured at roughly 11g. But when one consumer finished the stick and checked the container, about 36% of the product sat below the mouth of the tube. The conversation that followed wasn't "is it expensive?" It was "can I actually use it all the way to the end?"

Consumers are judging usable quantity, not labeled quantity — which makes packaging design part of the value claim.

The Occasion Changes the Question

In wedding makeup (837 mentions · 79.9K upvotes), consumers doing their own makeup instead of hiring a pro ask remarkably specific questions — sweat and longevity, skin prep, how it photographs, their undertone. Then ASK → TRY → RETURN: they take the advice, try it, and come back with result photos and product lists. The same product draws different questions depending on when it's used.

And in smokey eye threads (1.3K · 35.4K), it was step-by-step still-image tutorials that drew engagement — in the short-form era. Process-heavy makeup needs to be paused and followed. Content you watch and content you follow along with are different things.

280,000 Conversations Boil Down to Five Questions

① COLOR  How many shades → What color does it become on my skin?

② USAGE  How pretty is it → How do I use it without failing?

③ CHANGE  "New and improved" → What exactly changed from the old one?

④ VALUE  How many grams → Can I use it all the way to the end?

⑤ OCCASION  Does it look pretty → Can I trust it on the days that matter?

BRAND MESSAGE  →  CONSUMER QUESTION

Before brands decide what to show, Reddit consumers are already saying what they want to know

Consumers Name the Gaps First

The questions begin the moment the product reaches the consumer's hands. USE → QUESTION → COMPARE → SHARE — try, ask, compare, and report back to each other. Reddit is where that cycle keeps accumulating.

Local models, English packaging, local distribution — all essential. But the second localization begins after the product is in the consumer's hands. North America's next opportunity lies less in new trends than in the questions that still have no answer.

LUK'S INSIGHT

1. Engineer shade fit, not shade count

Olive-undertone bases and mauve/berry blushes are product briefs consumers have already validated — by mixing them at home. Undertone engineering belongs in formulation design, not marketing.

2. Rewrite the product page in the order of consumer questions

What it becomes on my skin, how much to use, what changed, whether it can be used to the end, whether it holds on the big day — a page that answers the five questions first turns review risk into an asset. Packaging and residual product are part of the value claim.

3. Export planning includes the second localization

Translation and distribution are only the first localization. Designing for the questions that come after purchase — usage, occasion-level trust, undertone payoff — is the real differentiation for entering North American color.
