Prime Day's Real Battle
Happens on TikTok

Why Korean beauty took Amazon's #1.

The Search Bar Came Before the Cart

Prime Day was originally a discount day. 2026 was different.

Shoppers arrived with their purchases already decided — and the deciding didn't happen on Amazon. They had already seen everything on TikTok. Amazon was just the checkout counter.

Spent Less, Bought More Often

▼ What shrank

Per-purchase spend $53 → $48

Per-household spend $156 → $143

Deal satisfaction 68% → 59%

▲ What grew

2+ purchases: 63% of shoppers

3+ purchases: 41%

Beauty's share of spend: 26% (all-time high)

Instead of one big haul, people made multiple confident purchases of things they were sure about. And deal satisfaction has now fallen three events in a row — "it's cheap" no longer opens wallets on its own.

Every #1 Spot Changed Hands

Across all four beauty categories, not a single budget brand holds the top spot:

Skincare   Medicube 15.9%  vs EltaMD 7.5%

Makeup   Tarte 10.0%  vs Maybelline 5.9%

Hair   Nutrafol 12.2%  vs Olaplex 7.6%

Fragrance   Armani 7.6%  vs Sol de Janeiro 7.1%

Even holding a crown wasn't safe: Nutrafol kept hair's #1, but its share was cut nearly in half — 19.8% → 12.2%.

The Ingredient Came Before the Brand Name

The clearest case is Medicube — the Korean skincare brand now sitting at Amazon's skincare #1:

9.3% → 13.2%

Amazon beauty share

10.6% → 15.9%

Amazon skincare share

Its Zero Pore Pad 2.0 climbed from last year's #3 to skincare's best-seller. But the climb didn't start with the brand name. It started with an ingredient: PDRN — 460 million TikTok views and 80,000 shoppable videos. Ingredient first, brand later.

Demand Built on TikTok, Harvested on Amazon

The same mechanics powered the other big movers:

◆ Tarte — makeup #1

14 months on TikTok Shop, overtook Maybelline, 6 of its 10 best-sellers are eye makeup, mascara searches up 14%.

◆ Shark — hair #3

From outside the top 10 to #3, TikTok Shop sales up 155%, hair devices up 145% — beauty's fastest-rising category.

Both brands converted popularity built outside Amazon into money inside Amazon.

Rankings are decided in the feed, not at the event.

More Shoppers, Fewer Sales

Event-week beauty searches exploded from 100 million to 170 million (+71%). Yet clicks and purchases both declined. What sold? Only the brands people already knew by name — branded search share rose from 17.4% to 20.2%.

The category data splits cleanly in two: researched, considered purchases surged (hair devices +145%, makeup +97%, skincare +82%), while habitual replenishment categories — nails, lashes, men's basics — grew a steady 38–42% regardless. A discount cannot change a habit.

How Brands Lose — and How Winners Planted Early

The losing pattern is consistent: start spending on ads after the event begins (shoppers decided months ago), try to persuade with price (half of shoppers compared prices elsewhere anyway), and lean on discount depth alone (satisfaction at 59% and falling). Discounts are no longer a weapon. Only the brand that reached people first gets bought.

The winners shared three pre-event habits:

Build awareness outside Amazon first — 60% of brands did, up 30% from last year

Sell with creators — 7x return on ad spend, 10x for fragrance

Fix the brand page — 71% saw dwell time rise, 58% saw sales rise

Four Things Korean Beauty Brands Must Do Now

① Make the ingredient name famous first

What Medicube promoted wasn't the brand — it was PDRN. Every brand needs at least one word people will search.

② Manage brand search volume like revenue

Search rises first; sales follow. Today's search volume is your revenue three months from now.

③ Treat TikTok as distribution, not advertising

Fourteen months on TikTok Shop was enough to flip a category #1. Budget it as a distribution channel, not a content line item.

④ Stock inventory in advance

A stockout drops your ranking instantly. Plan production through the fall event — which Amazon is reportedly considering moving to September.

The Next Event Has Already Started

The next signals are already visible in the feed: oral care claimed 7 of the top 20 trending hashtags, and expert-led content keeps compounding — dermatologist-tagged videos at 23.3 million views. The clock to September is a content clock and a production clock.

Prime Day is not a selling day.

It's the day you harvest what you planted months earlier.

The Manufacturing Angle: The Searchable Word Is Formulated, and So Is the Inventory

Two of the four moves above live inside the factory, not the marketing team. The searchable word — PDRN, niacinamide, exosomes — has to be a real, defensible hero ingredient chosen at the formulation stage, at a concentration worth naming. And the inventory — the thing that protects your ranking mid-event — depends on production lead time. If the fall event lands in September, the manufacturing decisions are due now.

At LUK Corp., we build both sides for global indie brands: hero-ingredient formulation with a concentration and evidence package worth putting in the product name, and flexible small-to-scale production planned backward from your event calendar.

Plant now. Harvest in September.

Hero-ingredient formulation and event-ready production — LUK Corp. builds it on your calendar.
