After the Algorithm,
What Grows a Brand?
WGSN's 2027 beauty marketing outlook — culture, community, and the prompt
Source : WGSN — 2027 Beauty Marketing Forecast
For years, beauty marketing had one answer: beat the algorithm. WGSN's 2027 outlook starts from a different premise. The influence once concentrated in algorithms is dispersing into communities, creators, and AI. From brands talking to consumers participating — pushing a one-way message is no longer enough.

WGSN's Four Pillars for 2027
WGSN names four moves: ① cultivate cultural capital, ② reveal the truth, ③ engineer emotion into experience, ④ reimagine product discovery. This post follows two of them — the front end where cultural relevance is built (①), and the back end where products get chosen by AI, creators, and communities (④).
Pillar ① — Enter Cultural Moments, Not Sales Seasons
The unit is no longer the campaign — it's the ongoing platform. Serialized storytelling instead of one-off ads (Gen Z is 17% more likely to watch long-form — GWI). Artists, musicians, and photographers as continuous creative platforms, not single collaborations. Ingredient deep-dives and formulation explainers turned into shareable social currency. And a culture-first campaign calendar built around music, sports, and subculture moments rather than retail peaks.
Saie (US) In-person masterclasses turned into a digital series — tutorial, Q&A, and purchase in one format
e.l.f. (US) Short-form timed to a reality-show finale — products placed inside survival missions
LAYR (Indonesia) Indie band live sets in its own tea shop — perfume translated into youth culture
ROWSE (Spain) Exhibitions with Barcelona photographers — skincare reframed as a "process"
Pillar ④ — Consumers Search in Sentences, Not Keywords
Consumers now pack skin type, routine, climate, and sensitivity into a single sentence and ask AI. The infrastructure of discovery is being rebuilt.
Prompt optimization Keyword SEO is giving way to prompt-ready product information
TikTok Shop as discovery engine Always-on affiliate networks of tutorials, reviews, and lives — affiliates drive 87% of top TikTok Shop beauty sales
Reddit as reputation engine The raw material of generative AI recommendations — 84% of US monthly Reddit users say searching there increased purchase confidence
And brands are acting on it — going to where decisions happen instead of pulling consumers to owned channels: a Korean brand focusing TikTok Shop on education rather than promotion, a global company deploying AI as infrastructure rather than a campaign, a brand building a campaign from real Reddit conversations, and a beauty retailer opening the first official retailer store on TikTok Shop.
What's Missing Isn't Budget — It's Placement
Making good content now matters as much as where and how you place it. One polished brand film absorbing the whole budget, content clustered on launch day only, influencer work ending at one-off seeding, information locked inside the product page — these are no longer enough.
Four fixes for Korean beauty, starting now:
① Rewrite product information in prompt language
Not ingredient lists — the sentence forms consumers actually ask AI.
② Turn creators into an always-on network
From campaign-based seeding to year-round affiliate structures.
③ Treat communities as proving grounds, not review farms
The goal is joining the conversation, not counting reviews.
④ Put the brand calendar on top of the culture calendar
Keyed to music, sports, and subculture moments — not sale seasons.
Being Searchable Is Not Being Chosen
Beauty consumers don't buy products alone — they're also buying emotional release, creative expression, and human connection. Culture creates attention; community adds conviction.
In 2027, the competition happens beyond the shelf. To be chosen, a brand needs culture and trust.
LUK'S INSIGHT
1. Prompt language is made at the manufacturing stage
The product sentences AI can cite come from development outputs — efficacy evidence, usage conditions, target skin definitions — not copywriting. Brands that document formulation logic and claim substantiation in sentence form get cited first in prompt search.
2. Specs that survive community scrutiny are marketing assets
Once Reddit becomes the reputation engine, real-use details — texture, wear, residue, repurchase — outlast any ad. The quality and evidence that survive the proving ground are decided at the manufacturing stage, not after launch.
3. A culture calendar needs a flexible production calendar
When launches follow cultural moments instead of retail peaks, small-batch, high-rotation production and short lead times become preconditions of the marketing plan. Your manufacturing partner's flexibility is part of the 2027 brand calendar.
